Hot Water Beach

Hot Water Beach is a truly unique Kiwi experience that every New Zealander should experience at least once in their lifetime!

An underground river of hot water flows from the interior of the earth to surface in the Pacific Ocean at Hot Water Beach – a long beautiful white beach located between Tairua and Whitianga.

The stunning beach overlooks the Pacific Ocean and offshore Castle Rock, with Pohutukawa lined cliffs at either end of the beach.

Two hours either side of low tide visitors flock to the usually deserted Hot Water Beach to find hot water bubbling through the golden sand. Families, kids and couples can been seen digging their own spa pool in the sand to lie back in and relax while the steam from their hot pool envelops them.

With the ebb and flow of the tide each individually created hot pool is washed away clearing the way for the next influx of visitors.

The beach also boasts some great surf, cruisy café’s and galleries and is a 5 minute drive to another Coromandel ‘must do’ – the walk into Cathedral Cove.

REMEMBER: The hot springs are only accessible at low tide, however more often than not two hours each side of low tide, will still provide you with an opportunity to dig your own spa.

REAL NZ festival

The Coromandel is set to host another series of events as part of the REAL NZ festival. Brits at the Beach will be the feature event in Tairua, the Waihi Goldfest trolley derby and the Hahei Tractor Bash will also provide provincial entertainment to visitors from around the world.
The REAL NZ festival has been a nationwide success with communities across the country showing off their backyard. The concept of encouraging people to take the long way round to experience grassroots New Zealand has worked with over 1000 events countrywide. The Coromandel has leveraged this message with the road trip campaign while contributing to the atmosphere with over 20 events. This weekend could see the best representation of the Coromandel yet with three established events occurring over 3 consecutive days.
Brits at the Beach, which runs from Friday to Sunday, will create a home away from home in the picturesque seaside town of Tairua. Saturday is the big day with the grand parade and village fete. The Tairua Rugby Club are hosting events and screening the rugby. On Sunday after a British breakfast it’s likely most will continue north to the Hahei Tractor Bash. Tractor enthusiasts make the annual pilgrimage down to the Hahei Beach where another series of quirky events will entertain visitors.
Saturday will also see the annual Trolley Derby in Waihi, part of the month long Gold Fest. With sunny weather forecast for the weekend this should make for a fast track and plenty of entertainment.
As predicted rugby fans are following their teams to the games and with the quarterfinals all happening this weekend visitors are likely to be concentrated in the cities. However as the tournament progresses and teams get knocked out visitors will spend more time travelling around provincial New Zealand. Tourism forecasts for an increase in international tourists towards the business end of the tournament and with an average length of stay of 23 days there is still plenty of time to show visitors why the Coromandel is good for your soul.

Cotswold Cottage Country House
Après le motel, je suis allée m'installer à Cotswold Cottage avec Jacqui et Graham. C'est un Bed&Breakfast très chaleureux et très avenant. J'y passe de très bons moments ! Jacqui et Graham ont toujours travaillé dans l'hospitalité donc ils savent comment vous mettre à l'aise et s'occuper de vous !
La chambre où je suis est assez petite mais très bien fournie, très propre et chaleureuse. Les autres chambres sont plus grandes et une contient même une baignoire spa !
Le lieu a un petit côté anglais, chic qui n'est pas pour déplaire. Un peu en retrait de la ville, il est tout de même bien placé pour aller à Auckland ou pour prendre la route vers le sud de l'île !

Thames to Paihia and back

Hi all
I have just returned from a week touring Northland , what a fabulous week.
We based ourselves in the tourist town of Paihia,a tourist town in the Bay of Islands and one that cateres well for all travellers needs,most of the major tours and day trips start in Paihia and all the companies seem to collect from the accommodation so a real plus,
and from there traveled out every day.
The weather was unusually warm even hot at times for the first 3 days and we took advantage to go on the trip to hole in the rock.Well it was just the most perfect day so calm and clear and the boat managed to sail though the hole quite a feat as there is very little room for error.
The next day we went to Keri Keri and the Freanch market was on in the town center it runs every Sunday and is well worth a visit loads of goodies ,food ,local wine and lovely soaps.
Then on to the Stone House and Kemp House the stone house is the original wharehouse for Samuel marsden and the Kemp House the oldest home in New Zealand but it was closed due to urgent work being done .
This was not a problem as there was so much else to see , the Maroi pa , the church and the Maroi village kept us busy all afternoon.
Monday saw us take a road trip to Mangonui and have fish and chips in what has to be one of the most beautiful bays in New Zealand, the whole trip was full of amazing beaches and just breath taking scenery we were really done in by the time we got back to the accommodation
We also took the trip up to Cape Reinga and travelled up the coast by bus a bit scary with all the waves rolling around the wheels at times but the driver was very good and explained why he was so close to the sea and how they had to slow at river/stream inlets then we went to surf down the sand dunes as well as being able to walk right to the end of the Cape what a day just magic
We stayed in a resort in Paihia and I am afraid I can not recommend in it was just so tired and needing loads of maintenance ,but the staff were super so I will not say were but it was a time share swap.
We also went to the Waitangi Treaty grounds very moving and quite beautiful and we must have spent abut 3 hours there.
After 6 days our break was over and we travelled back to Thames .
I have to say I love the far North but to me Coromandel Peninsular and Thames are as beautiful and certainly the scenery from the shore is far more heart stopping yes we had a great time but the Coromandel is Paradise lets keep it that way

I have just spent three days touring in the Coromandel and judging a Café Crawl – part of the region’s Homegrown Festival on this month.
First town was Thames. We checked into Cotswold Cottage, a charming B&B just on the edge of town with a sunny outlook over the Kauaeranga River. Her bestselling cook book, The Confident Cook, is a much loved and used book in many New Zealand homes. She was editor of A Treasury of New Zealand Baking which has raised more than $28,000 for the Breast Cancer Foundation, and in 2010 worked with NZGFW members, editing a new book Comfort, Food to Share from which all royalties will benefit the Starship Foundation. The New Zealand Vegetable Cookbook, her latest book, co-authored with Ginny Grant and Kathy Paterson, was released in mid August.

A proposed average rates rise forecast of 2.01 per cent has been endorsed by the Thames-Coromandel District Council in its draft work programme for the year ahead.
Ratepayers have been sent copies of a draft summary version and Council is inviting feedback on the full draft plan.
Ratepayers are not the only ones that can share their opinions with the Council about its draft plan. Residents, groups and organisations are also invited to read the plan and make submissions before the closing date of 18 March 2011.
Two important issues highlighted for consideration this year include the Hauraki Plains Cycleway and higher local rates for additional community projects.
With some communities indicating to Council that they are willing to pay more for additional projects and services, Council has decided to put the option to residents and ratepayers for submission.
Similarly, Council is asking for public input on its upcoming decision on whether to make an initial lump sum contribution of $450,000 for the Thames to Paeroa leg of the Hauraki Plains Cycleway project. In addition Council would also need to contribute up to $150,000 per year towards the annual operating costs.
Submission forms are available from Council offices and libraries or from Council's website at www.tcdc.govt.nz/annualplan.
Submissions close at 4.00pm on the 18th of March 201

Cash strapped TCDC, with a Mayor who has a tourism background, is supported by Councillors who are focused on rate reduction, and the Mayor has stated that much weight will be given to public submissions on the project.

We need as many positive, supporting submissions as possible. It can be as simple as “We support funding of the cycleway from Thames to Hikutaia, as it will be a major economic and recreational/tourism asset”, or you can expand on the wider tourism implications for the rest of the Peninsula; the array of new businesses that will spring from the project; the golden opportunity of Government funds to make it happen; health benefits; and any other element that you think will excite the Councillors.

The Thames Community Board are supportive of the Cycleway, but Councilors from Whangamata/Tairua/Pauanui, Coromandel, and Whitianga will need to be persuaded.

Also, the $150,000 estimated running costs should be addressed in submissions. As far as we are aware, the HDC plan is the set up a Council Controlled Organisation to run the Cycleway, and this means the decisions on maintenance budgets would be subject to Council input. But also, Council would have a say in how the CCO produced income from the Cycyleway, including advertising revenue from the website, and a commission on associated tourism activities such as tours, bike hire etc, and any concessions granted. The CCO – depending on how it is set up – may also be able to attract institutional funding or sponsorship.

So get scribbling and lets make this thing happen!

On a purely personal level today we sent a large amonut of beding and unwanted equipment to help those in need in Christchurch and our wonderful guests all are giving donations to help.
You would be amazed at the determination of the people of Canterbury to get things back to normal as quickly as possible so help us help them by comming and enjoying our wonderful country

Twin Rivers

The Twin Rivers is a relatively new event on the NZ Ski Racing calendar. It is a one day event made up of two races.

The 1st is the main race which is a 2 Up event that is about 50kms in length that starts in the Piako River at Ngatea and ski for 5 – 10 mins on flat water which runs into the Firth of Thames which is generally relatively rough and then back into the Waihou River which generally flattens out again.

The top boats do this in around 25 mins. The second race of the day runs the length of the second river – the Waihou to the finish of the main race and is for Novice, Masters and Sub Juniors only.

The Thames Go Girl Triathlon is a fun event for women aged 13 and older consisting of a 275m swim, 10km ride, 2.8km run or 2km walk.

The thrust of the event is getting women who are not into exercising off the couch and onto the road.

So it’s about encouraging and inspiring and it has had a big impact on many of the women who have got involved. All proceeds from the event will go to cancer research at Waikato Hospital.

Many NZers to sleep easier as temperatures drop

The humidity that has been frustrating people all over the country will tonight be flushed away by a southerly cold front.

However, Metservice's Bob McDavitt says the temperature may remain as it is for the next few days in areas north of Taupo.

McDavitt says the humidity is typical for this time of the year - the first half of February is usually when New Zealand sees its highest temperatures.

On Sunday Timaru suffered its hottest day since the 1970s, with temperature gauges hitting 40.3C.

Other cities in the South Island have also seen sweltering hot temperatures, with Christchurch, Oamuru and Ashburton all recording 36C on Sunday.

McDavitt says the heat is also due to the high pressure zone sitting on the Tasman Sea, forcing hot air toward New Zealand.

This has been caused by Australia's recent cyclones, Anthony and Yasi.

He said the situation was similar to the Christchurch heat wave of 1973, which was blown over by a north westerly from Australia and caused New Zealand's highest recorded temperature of 42.4C in Marlborough and Rangiora.

New Zealand ranked top three by Wanderlust

New Zealand has been named the third 'Top Country' in the world in this year's prestigious Wanderlust Travel Awards.

New Zealand received an overall satisfaction score of 96.13% from international visitors who voted in this year's awards, which were handed down at a ceremony in London on 3 February, hosted by prestigious travel magazine Wanderlust.

The third placing, behind Namibia in top spot and Costa Rica in second, equals New Zealand's bronze in the same category last year.

Tourism New Zealand Chief Executive Kevin Bowler said the award would help reinforce the value of a New Zealand holiday in the UK market, where Wanderlust was well read.

"Wanderlust has a circulation of more than 30,000 and our top three finish will stand us in good stead for UK travellers considering where they want to go on their next overseas holiday."

Wanderlust said on its website that it was Namibia's sense of drama and accessibility that won it top spot.

"And that mix of drama and accessibility surely accounts, too, for runners-up Costa Rica and New Zealand - destinations where the natural world pulls out all the stops, but creature comforts are never far away," Wanderlust said.

Other New Zealand mentions in this year's awards were Air New Zealand, which finished third in the Top Airline category, and the TranzAlpine train journey, which took seventh in the Top Rail Journey category.

The Wanderlust Travel Awards are held annually and include 13 award categories and are based on travellers' experiences from December 2009 to November 2010.

Cathedral Cove Closed

Hi all

Latest we have heard re Cathedral Cove track is that a gate has been put across the track closing it and denying access to the whole reserve including Gemstone and Stingray Bay. I guess people will still try and access by bypassing the gate but they would be doing so at their own risk.
Hot water Beach springs still OK to access but easier from middle carpark rather than trying to ford stream at Southern end as it is scoured out.Bad news is that there are no funds to carry out major repairs and an application for special funding could take months.

I plan to write to Minister of Tourism John Key along the lines that NZ uses the cove as their icon so money is needed to fix immediately.

New Zealand has been named the second best place to be by in 2011 by the global broadcasting network CNN.

CNN, which consulted Lonely Planet US editor Robert Reid, guidebook creator Pauline Frommer and travel firm executive Martin Rapp, said the Rugby World Cup was adding excitement to an already popular destination.

"Wellington, which brands itself as the 'coolest little capital in the world', will host some of the activities and hopes to attract fans who want to explore other parts of the country," CNN reported.

It quoted Reid as saying Wellington was "a great kind of springboard" and that he was planning a visit and determined to learn the haka.

CNN said the film industry was thriving in New Zealand, referring to Sir Peter Jackson's latest work on The Hobbit and his success with The Lord of the Rings.

There's no better way to see the Kauaeranga Valley than to go by mountain bike. The road follows the Kauaeranga River passing a couple of swimming spots on the way.

You can cycle up the coast road to the Square Kauri Tree, one of the largest and oldest on the Coromandel Peninsula. This tree is located on the road between Tapu and Coroglen, about two hours ride from Thames.

What a fantastic weekend on the Coromandel.
The sun block was definitely needed as the sun beamed down
on us all as we made the most of what was on offer for the long
weekend. Be it Bath Tub racing in Whitianga, Indulging in Paua
in Port Charles, Turning Back the Clock and rocking to the good
old sounds in Pauanui or battling it out in the NZ Corporate
Battle of the Bands in Thames, there sure was plenty on offer
throughout the region. Congratulations to all involved in making
the long weekend on the Coromandel so eventful, and thank
you to all who participated.
November is shaping up to be just as busy. We suggest you start

Incorporated Societies Act 1908 on 12 September 2005 with

The Coromandel Heritage Trust
was formed in 2003 to establish THE TREASURY, a purpose-built archive and family history centre in Thames, New Zealand. The Treasury preserves and promotes the history and stories of the people in this region - a region which played such a big part in the early development of New Zealand.

The Treasury houses an ever-growing collection of resources relating to the early history of Thames and the entire Coromandel Region. For the historical researcher, we have a large collection of history books and historical manuscripts as well as many resources to help research your family history, such as newspapers, magazines, photographs, Jubilee books, family records and certificates.

Cotswold Cottage is situated in Thames, one of the most picturesque parts of New Zealand and holds an extremely important place in New Zealand’s proud history.

The Maori name for Thames is Hotereni. The Maori iwi are Ngati Maru, who are descendants of Marutuahu's son Te Ngako. Ngati Maru is part of the Ngati Marutuahu confederation of tribes or better known as Hauraki Iwi.

The town was initially built during a gold rush, the first major discovery of gold was made on August 10, 1867 by William Hunt, in the Kuranui Stream at the north end of Thames. The subsequent mine produced more than 102,353oz bullion and was known as the Shotover. The era from 1868 to 1871 were the bonanza years for the town with gold production topping one million pounds sterling at its peak. Official figures for production of the Thames Mines recorded a yield of 2,327,619oz bullion with the value at $845 million. The 3 richest fields were the Manukau / Golden Crown / Caledonian mines but many others yielded near equivalent amounts. Towards the end of the last century Thames was the largest centre of population in New Zealand with 18,000 inhabitants and well over 100 hotels and three theatres 1868. For a while it was thought it would replace Auckland as the major town in the area. A former local institution of learning was the Thames School of Mines. Thames also benefited from a period of extensive Kauri logging in the surrounding ranges around the same time.

Many people migrated to Thames at its peak, and it was soon the second-largest city in New Zealand. However, as the gold began to diminish, so did the number of inhabitants, and although Thames never shrank, it has never grown much either. It is still the biggest town on the Coromandel. The population in the 2006 census was 6,756, an increase of 51 since 2001. Many residents work in tourism and locally owned businesses servicing the local farming community.
Thames was formed from two historic towns, Grahamstown and Shortland, of which many original buildings still stand. Shortland was in the south of Thames and was founded on the 27th of July 1867 when James Mackay, civil commissioner for the Hauraki District concluded an agreement with local Maori. This agreement secured the rights to local mineral deposits leading to the proclamation of the Thames Goldfield on 1 August. Grahamstown was founded the following year at the northern end of present Thames, approximately one mile from Shortland. The two towns merged in 1874 after it emerged the heart of the Goldfield was in Grahamstown. Shortland waned in importance until the turn of the century when the Hauraki Plains were developed for farming and the Shortland railway station was opened.

The land involved in goldmining in Thames was Māori owned; important parts of the goldfield were owned by the Ngati Maru Rangatira (Chief) Rapana Maunganoa and the Taipari family. In 1878, when Wiremu Hōterene Taipari married a woman of the Ngāti Awa tribe of Whakatāne, Ngāti Awa carvers arrived at Thames and built a meeting house at Pārāwai it is incorrectly said to have been a wedding gift for the couple, when in actual fact Wiremu's father had paid money for another whare (meeting house), which was sold to the governor general at the time. So when Wiremu's father returned to collect the whare the Ngati Awa chief apologized and said he would have another one built which will signify the marriage between Wiremu Taipari and his daughter. The house, named Hotunui in honour of an important Ngāti Maru ancestor, now stands in the Auckland War Memorial Museum.

The K2 takes its name from the Coromandel township of Kuaotunu, an enchanting community on the wild eastern coastline of the Coromandel Peninsula. In Maori "Kuaotunu" means "to inspire fear in young animals". With 2300 metres of up hill climbing the K2 race promises to do just that and more.

The 2 represents the almost 200km that the ride will cover. Like the K2 the k2 mountain is the 2nd highest, and probably the most difficult to climb, mountain in the World.the l 200km solo race is without doubt the toughest one day road cycle race in the Southern hemisphere.

The event is also unique and growing in popularity every year

Other events in this years HOMEGROWN Festival include: a four day Cooking School and
chocolate workshops, live music in both licensed venues and outdoor and Whangamata
Artz Maynia. Orchard Tours will be on offer in Hahei and to round things off you can also
enjoy the Coromandel Homegrown food trail and the ever popular Thames and
Coroglen Farmers Markets and the Coromandel Town Homegrown Community Market.
The wider festival runs from 1 May – 31 May, and is aimed at celebrating and showcasing

Coromandel Town in The Coromandel, at first glance seems a
quaint but sleepy little town. Tucked away in studios all over
town are artists, many who have traveled from other countries
to live and work in its stunning scenery and to be part of its
creative community. However, they are planning to show
themselves for the Great Coromandel Arts Tour, which will run
for nine days. This will be the opportunity for visitors to see
artists at work, and purchase artwork direct from a whole
range of artists whose studios may not otherwise be open to
the public.
This will be a well coordinated event: new work from
established (e.g, Barry Brickell) and emerging artists,
guaranteed opening times for the studios, clear signage (in
the form of that local icon the mussel buoy) and good
directions to the individual studio locations.
The art ranges from pottery, sculpture, clothing and
accessories, wood carving, doll making, textiles, ironwork,
painting, printmaking and jewellery.

ONCE LIVED IN A HOUSE WHICH WAS SITED ON COTSWOLD COTTAGE LAND
A New Zealander by birth (15th June 1892) Keith Park had an outstanding record during the First World War. He began his military career with the New Zealand Army and then transferring to the British Army as an artillery man, serving in Gallipoli and then on the Somme. After he was wounded, he transferred to the Royal Flying Corps, and was credited with shooting down some twenty enemy aircraft.

Between the wars, Park was a Commanding Officer at Britain's peacetime fighter stations. Before 1940 he was appointed senior air staff officer to Sir Hugh (later Lord) Dowding.

The Evacuation of Dunkirk
At the beginning of the war, when Fighter Command was divided into Groups, Dowding had no hesitation in placing Keith Park as the C-in-C of 11 Group, the most important Group in Fighter Command. This Group not only protected the southern coastline of Britain and South-East England from enemy attack, but was defending London which was a prime target for the Luftwaffe’s bombers.

During the evacuation of troops from Dunkirk, Keith Park organised the air protection, shuttling his fighters back and forth across the English Channel and intercepting the Luftwaffe as best they could before the Luftwaffe could attack the tired and exhausted British troops on the beaches. Members of the British Expeditionary Force greatly criticised the Royal Air Force for not providing greater cover for them, blaming them for the number of casualties sustained on the beaches. It was not until the resounding success of the Battle of Britain that the RAF received the respect that they deserved and even then, many soldiers could still not forgive the RAF for what happened at Dunkirk. Park later stated that, under the circumstances he had done his best with what was made available to him. He had only a small number of aircraft to deploy on these missions, and what aircraft did take part could only spend limited time over the battle area due to shortage of fuel. He sympathised with those that had turned against him at the time, but the battle over Dunkirk made our pilots battle hardened for the forthcoming Battle of Britain.

The Battle of Britain
If Hitler was to invade Britain, or force the British Government to the negotiating table, as a first step he had to gain control of the air. The Battle of Britain was the first major campaign to be fought entirely by air forces. The RAF had 531 serviceable fighters out of a total of 609, in reserve another 289. The Germans, in total, had 4,539 aircraft. 2,936 pilots (from at least 12 countries) took part – 544 of them would lose their lives in the Battle of Britain.

It is said Dowding controlled the Battle of Britain from day to day, while Keith Park controlled it hour by hour. Park organised and managed his squadrons and men brilliantly, he was respected and admired by many, yet as with all commanders one has to be open for criticism. Most of this was due to the fact that he fought the battle in a defensive manner when it was thought that he should give greater consideration to taking the fight to the Germans in an offensive manner. Park's answer to that was that the role of the fighter aircraft was one of defence and should be used in attacking those that were attacking us.

Park’s leadership, and his men’s bravery, denied the Luftwaffe air superiority. Hitler called off his planned invasion of Britain – “Operation Sealion”. After the war, when the Nazi’s most senior commander, Field Marshal von Runstedt, was asked which battle he regarded as most decisive, he replied: “The Battle of Britain”.

The Defence of Malta
In a similar political move that forced the retirement of Dowding from the RAF, Keith Park was relieved of his command of 11 Group soon after the Battle of Britain, taking up a position with a training squadron. He was then posted to Egypt in 1941, and after that Malta, in 1942. His role in this island’s defence was also pivotal. Park's ingenuity, aggression and eagerness to help in these theatre of ariel operations did not pass unnoticed. Eisenhower (in Algiers) expressed himself ‘most grateful for the splendid support afforded by air operators from Malta’ and Montgomery praised Park and his men for their assistance to the Eight Army. After Malta, he was posted to South-East Asia in 1944-46.

Crime

Transportation Safety

Transportation accidents while traveling pose a potentially significant risk. The following simple precautions can help make you safer in getting from A to B.

Upon arrival, immediately switch on your mobile phone.

"Hassle"

Terrorism

Thames Go Girl Triathlon 29 March 2009
The Thames Go Girl Triathlon is a fun event for women aged 13 and older consisting of a 275m swim, 10km ride, 2.8km run or 2km walk. The thrust of the event is getting women who are not into exercising off the couch and onto the road.
So it’s about encouraging and inspiring and it has had a big impact on many of the women who have got involved. This year’s event will be held on March 29, 09. All proceeds from the event will go to cancer research at Waikato Hospital.

Mountain bikers from all around New
Zealand and abroad are about to
descend on the small Coromandel
town of Colville for New Zealand’s
biggest mountain bike marathon –
the .
In spite of the tough economic
conditions, over 1500 entries have
been received – close to a record
for the event which has built up a
reputation as a “must do”. Entries
have been received from as far
away as Canada, Switzerland and the UK with a particularly strong group from
Australia. Within NZ riders are coming from as far south as Invercargill and as far
north as Kerikeri.
The international riders are usually a mystery in terms of their ability to handle the
Coromandel conditions, but top picks for 2009 would have to include Waikato
triathlete and mountain biker Scott Thorne – last year’s 3rd place winner but top
placed Kiwi - and veteran woman Pam Hewlitt who is returning to defend her 2008
title. With top ranked riders notorious for leaving their entries until the last moment
though, picking a winner is always likely to be a dodgy affair.
The event actually comprises three rides – the signature 72km marathon event, a
40km no prisoners taken off road ride and a 24km introductory ride. The 72km
marathon ride has raised particular interest this year as DoC has permitted use of
the coastal track around the remote northern tip of the Coromandel Peninsula on a
trial basis, rather than the brutal climb over the top which is the normal mountain
biking route. Race organiser Graeme Brown says “We always get great feedback
about the race, especially the amazing views along the way, but the very tough
climb on the marathon event has put a lot of people off trying it. It’s clear that
DoC’s cooperation has encouraged a whole new group to have a go. We have a
limit of 1000 riders on the coastal track and this ride is full”.
The current marathon race record is just 2 hours and 53 minutes, set by ex World
24hour event champion Tim Vincent of Nelson in 2005. The record has survived in
spite of challenges from highly regarded internationals including Bruce Wicks last
year – a member of the USA World Cup mountain biking team. The revised course
using the coastal track is longer but given that the major climb has been removed it
would seem likely that the record will come under serious threat.
Brown says the race has an “amazing atmosphere and that largely comes down to
being hosted by a remote but friendly coastal community, where visitors can really
get away from it all for the weekend. The Colville school hosts the event and is a
major beneficiary of it generating a significant portion of the schools budget for the
year.”

Over 60,000 people can’t be wrong – that is how many people flocked to the Southern Hemisphere’s most popular celebration of nostalgia in 2005.

The small surfy town of Whangamata jumps into life every April rekindling the fond memories many Kiwis have of the golden years – the 50’s and 60’s.

For a week Whangamata looks like a movie set straight out of Grease, with over 1500 polished hot rods croozin the main street, surfers hanging ten 60’s style on their longboards, the restaurants and café’s transformed to 60’s American diners and Rock n Roll bands from New Zealand and Australia bashing out tunes from a bygone era in the street.

Festival goers are encouraged to dress in the spirit of the festival, whether that is being part of the 60’s fashion show or Nostalgia golf competition, with all golfers in 60’s attire. Other events include a drive in movie, low brow art festival and nostalgia market.

The cars though are the highlight of the festival with an organised cruise of the stunning loop around the Coromandel, night cruises around the streets of Whangamata and a huge grand parade down the main street of Whangamata before Saturday’s street festival.

The sounds and sights of the Beach Hop are an experience that every Kiwi should experience at least once, but like most Kiwi’s once you’ve had a taste of one Beach Hop you’ll be hooked and back for more!

Spot to Visit: Opoutere
Spectacular, pristine and spiritual are words used to describe
this little piece of paradise on the eastern side of
the Peninsula. This sleepy little village is a million miles
away from the hustle and bustle and well worth a visit if
you are in the area.
Opoutere Surf Beach boasts a
magnificent white sand beach with
crystal clear water. It is accessed
through a forested reserve which
runs its entire 5km length. As well
as providing a protective buffer zone
which limits over-development, this
reserve provides pleasant paths
through which visitors can meander
on their way to and from the shore.
At the northern end of the beach are
interesting rock pools which can be
explored and the historic Phoenix
goldmine can be reached through
the state forest. More adventurous
walks can also be accessed nearby.
Wharekawa Harbour entrance can
be found at the southern end of the
beach and the estuary which lies
behind, with its mudflats and mangroves
is home to a myriad of sea,
shell and birdlife. The expansive
sandspit at the entrance is visually
stunning and also holds a particular
appeal for anyone with an interest
in birdwatching as here you will
find the Opoutere Wildlife Refuge
Reserve.
This refuge is a significant breeding
ground for many wading and sea
birds including the Variable Oyster
Catcher and the very special and
endangered New Zealand Dotterel.
Only 1500 NZ Dotterel remain in the
wild and there are about 19 pairs
at Opoutere. DOC have a ranger
present during the summer breeding
season to protect the birds and
eggs.
The public should exercise care in
this vicinity and must remain outside
of any fenced sections. Dogs are
not allowed.
You will find the Opoutere turnoff on
SH 25 between Whangamata and
the Hikuai turnoff.

The Koru depicts new beginnings, growth and harmony, taken from the symbolism of a unfurled silver fern leaf. New Zealand has some of the most beautiful ferns in the world.

Hei Matau (Fish Hook)
The Maori symbols or meaning for Hei-Matau more commonly known as the fish hook symbolizes prosperity.
Maori use fish in many of their traditional food dishes. Fish were so plentiful to the Maori that the simple ownership of a fish hook meant prosperity. The Hei-Matau (fish hook) also represents strength, determination and good health, as well as providing safe journey over water.

Single Twist

The manaia is known as a spiritual guardian, and carrier of supernatural powers.
Traditionally depicted as a bird like figure with the head of a bird, body of a man and the tail of a fish , acting as a provider and protector over Sky, Earth and Sea. Likened to a bird sitting on your shoulder, looking after ones spirit, and guiding your spirit where it is supposed to go when your time comes.

Hei Tiki
Commonly known as a good luck charm the tiki is also considered a symbol of fertility. Assumed to be clear thinking, perceptive, loyal and knowledgeable, the wearers strength is their character. The Tiki is a talisman to the Maori people, and has been regarded as a good luck charm from the ancient times. The Maori believe the Tiki represents the unborn human embryo. The most valuable tiki's were carved from greenstone and were handed down through the generations as treasured possessions.

Since the last Sanctuary newsletter
, back in August, Department
of Conservation (DOC) Ranger,
Fin Buchanan’s, rodent dog
has made his final rounds in
the DCWT Sanctuary. This
was done during October with
positive results — no trace of
rodents — following Rob’s rat
bait treatment.
The Sanctuary can now be
considered pest-free! Since this
time Rob has been using the now
secure site to introduce any locally
found native frogs or reptiles.
On November 25, 2008 five
gecko and one Shore skink were
released, watched by Doug and
Jane Ashby of Hikutaia and a
group of interested locals. Doug is
Chairman’s Report
a member of the New Zealand Herpetological
Society (amphibian and
reptile awareness), so was able to
identify, house, and feed stray reptiles
that were found locally. Of the
five geckos that he had been caring
for, one is a rare striped gecko and
the others are the green tree geckos.
This brings the number of striped
gecko released into the Sanctuary,
to three, two males and one female.
The small Shore skink was released
under a stone beside the pond.
Although these animals are
rather secretive and one cannot
always expect to see them, we hope
that they breed successfully within
the Sanctuary so, perhaps, one day
they can be easily seen there basking
in the sun.
One of the potters at Driving
Creek Railway & Potteries has been
making DCWS branded mugs. It
is my intention to gift these to those
who kindly wish to have any endangered
native biota safely housed.

Our next project is to install
bird-feeders to encourage nectar
and insect-feeding birds. If one
visits the Tiritiri Matangi island
sanctuary, the effectiveness of welldesigned
feeders can be clearly seen.
To our dismay, we have seen the
native kaka beak, kowhai and some
other plant species ravaged by insects.
Spraying within the sanctuary
needs to be kept to a minimum, for
obvious reasons so we hope that by
encouraging small birds—some of
which are voracious insect eaters—
these should keep any undesirable
insects under control. I am not an
expert on birds, but my reading
informs me that this is the way to
go. A good quick reference booklet
is Geoff Moon’s Birds of New Zealand.
With regard to the pair of pateke
who have occupied the lake for the
past few years, we have not seen any
new chicks of late. We wonder if,
after seven clutches, they are now
past their optimum breeding age.
The pateke can still be seen gently
steaming around the pond.
At our recent Sanctuary Trust
meeting, it was decided that the
proposed Morton Jordon designed
“Interpretation Centre” building
at the top entrance was not really
affordable. A new more cost effective
design is now being considered,
but this will take time to work out.
It should be mentioned that money
cannot be spent on a building until
the fence loan has been paid off.
Fortunately the treasurer’s figures
show the loan could be paid by the

end of the summer season. Following
the winter lull, one dollar
per adult ticket (train ticket sold at
Driving Creek Railway), will again
be donated to the Sanctuary, this
money will go towards paying for
the Sanctuary fence.
Once the loan is paid the Sanctuary
should then be in a position to
apply for building grants.
A recent discovery in the Sanctuary
was a banded kokopu. This
rather endangered native fish was
basking in one of the bowls of the
fish ladder where water flows out of
the culvert under the dam.
The kokopu was about 180 mm
(7 in) long, a mature adult. Banded
kokopu are the most abundant of
our native fish and kauri forest
country seems to be their favourite
habitat.
Kokopu lay their eggs in damp
litter on stream banks in the upper
reaches of streams. When
young, they are one of five species
of whitebait which can climb and
so hopefully get up into the Sanctuary.
Once as adults, they could be
stranded there so we must get more
information on how best to cater for
them.

Walks near Coromandel

Walks - Coromandel Town Area

The Kauri Block

The Department of Conservation's newest development at Coromandel township is called The Kauri Block. It offers walkers a fantastic panorama of land and sea with a taste of Maori and Pakeha heritage.

Directions: If arriving into Coromandel town from Thames or Whitianga take Wharf Road, which is the left hand turn off the T-intersection when you arrive at Coromandel town. The walk's entrance has Department of Conservation signposts, and is next to a house (No 356) on the right as you head towards the wharf area.

Time: Two hours at a gentle pace, including the walk back to the car along Long Bay Road.

Coromandel Coastal Walkway

The walkway is from Fletcher Bay to Stony Bay located at the very top of the peninsula.Alternatively the walk can be done in reverse.

The walk provides great views of the coastline and offshore islands (Great Barrier Island, Cuvier, Mercury Islands, etc.). Visitors have the option of doing the walk return (6- 8 hours walking time) or joining an organised tour with Coromandel Discovery Tours who collect visitors from Coromandel Town, drop them at Fletcher Bay and pick them up at Stony Bay and return them to Coromandel Town.

Directions: Starting from Fletcher Bay. Fletcher Bay is at the road end, 36kms from Colville and 7km past Port Jackson. The road from Colville is unsealed (please note: not all rental vehicles are permitted on this road).

Time: The track is 7 kms in length and takes 3-4 hours one way

Tip: There is an alternative track for those wanting to mountain bike the

coastal journey.

Waiau Kauri Grove

A spectacular grove of kauri trees. These Kauris have been protected since before the turn of the century and are truly magnificent. The track is very well formed with footbridges and boardwalks, which take you close to the trees. An excellent walk for tree lovers.

Directions: Travel 3 kms south from Coromandel town and turn left into the 309 Road. Travel a further 8 kms along the 309 Road and you will find parking space on the right side of the road. The walk is on the left side of the road.

Time: 30 Minutes return

Waiau Falls

Right beside the road is a beautiful bush glade where the Waiau Falls crash over a rock face into a pool below. There is access by tracks both upstream and downstream of the falls. This is a great spot for a swim.

Directions: Travel 3 kms south from Coromandel and turn left into the 309 Road. Travel a further 7.3 kms along the 309 Road and right beside the road is the Waiau Falls.

Time: 2 Minutes one way

WALKS - THAMES COAST

Waiomu Kauri Grove Walk

This track takes visitors to one of the best remaining stands of Kauri on the peninsula, and takes visitors through luxuriant and diverse forest - from Nikau to tree fern to Kauri. This is another historic walk that takes visitors past mining remnants.

Directions: 12.5 kms north of Thames and 43.5 kms south of Coromandel Town is the settlement of Waiomu. The track starts at the end of the Waiomu Valley Road.

Time: 2.5 hours return.

Tip: Walkers will need to be prepared to cross a number of shallow fords and creeks. In some cases swing bridges are an alternative to getting wet feet and add another pleasant dimension to the journey.

Square Kauri Walk

The 15th largest kauri on the Peninsula is found just west of the Tapu-Coroglen road summit. Estimated to be 1200 years old, this tree has an unusual square-looking shape. The walking track to the tree is short but steep; from the viewing area visitors get good vies across to Maumaupaki (Camels Back) on the main Coromandel Range.

Directions: Along the Tapu Coroglen Road, approximately 8.5km from Tapu and 19.5km from Coroglen is the parking bay. The start of the track is opposite the parking bay.

Time: 20 minutes return.

Tip: The track is metal and has 187 steps

The Karangahake Gorge region combines gold mining history and natural beauty, much of it accessible through a variety of walks.

Gorge Historic Walkway
The Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkway partly follows the old railway line between Paeroa and Waihi (closed in 1979), with the remainder of the track following the banks of the Ohinemuri River.

The loop section includes the 1100 m railway tunnel at Karangahake. The old Paeroa railway station is now a visitor information centre located at Waikino.

The walkway is made up of three sections.

From the Waikino Visitor Centre, cross a footbridge to the Victoria Battery site, follow the old railway line to the Owharoa Falls/Taieri Stream confluence at Waitawheta Road (1 hour return).

From the other end, start at Karangahake beside the foundations of the Crown Battery, cross the river and go through the 1100 m former rail tunnel, which is well lit. From a bridge at the tunnel exit there is a choice of going on to Owharoa Falls (3 hours return) or taking the loop track back to Karangahake (45 minutes). The loop track is unsuitable for wheelchairs.

Part of the walkway follows the old railway formation through the gorge. Along the route there are several rail heritage features but the most notable are the:

1 km long Karangahake tunnel (1903-05) (which is illuminated so you can walk through it safely); and the
large steel truss bridge (1905) crossing the Ohinemuri River at the eastern end of the tunnel.

Gray went ahead with the staff to arrange the picnic and the much needed refreshments and seating area
by the time I arrived with the guests all we had to do was enjoy the day the fun and the music.

Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkway
The Karangahake Gorge Historical Walkway is situated off State Highway 2 between Paeroa and Waihi. It follows the Ohinemuri River as it tumbles over rocks and boulders through the steep-sided Karangahake Gorge. Gold mining relics and the natural beauty of the landscape make this a very memorable walk.

Part of the walkway is along the route of an old railway line that followed the riverbank through the gorge. It crosses three bridges and includes a two kilometre loop section that offers the chance to walk through an 1100 metre tunnel. The railway line was closed in 1979, allowing visitors to access the historical sites associated with gold mining. As you walk along this scenic gorge you can feel the past all around you.

In the early 1900s the townships of Karangahake, Owharoa and Waikino were important mining centres with large batteries to crush and treat gold-bearing quartz from local mines.

The Karangahake Gorge historic Walkway is seven kilometres long and takes about two hours one way. Allow 45 minutes for the loop section. The Crown Tramway Track and Windows Walk lead off the walkway. A guide to the walks CAN ALSO BE ARRANGED.

The 16th Annual Paeroa Highland Games & Tattoo will be held on Saturday 14th February 2009 at the Paeroa Domain. What started out as a small Pipe Bands Competition has grown over the years, and today is a fully-fledged Highland Games, one of only seven such Scottish gatherings in New Zealand, and the only one in New Zealand to hold an Evening Tattoo.

Hot Water Beach
Hot Water Beach is located along New Zealand's Pacific coast just south of Mercury Bay at the northeast tip of the beautiful Coromandel Peninsula. Just over 2 hours drive from Auckland, Tauranga, Hamilton and 30 minutes from Whitianga.

Hot Water Beach is world famous for its Hot Pools and has been voted one of the top ten beach's in the world. For two hours either side of low tide, you can dig in the sand for hot spring water and make your own spa pool. It's good fun summer and winter. There is also lagoon close to the beach that provides safe, warm swimming for families and children.

Hot Water Beach has two fissures issuing water as hot as 64ºC (147ºF) at a rate as high as 15 litres/minute. This water contains large amounts of salt (NOT salt water), calcium, magnesium, potassium, fluorine, bromine and silica. There are other hot water springs nearby but the location of these two springs on the beach make them unique in the world.

(During the visit to our district by members of the Whakatane Historical Society, the party was met at Totara, near Kopu, by Mr Isdale who escorted it to the famous plateau known as "Totara Pa", an ancient stronghold of the Maori people. It now presents a scene of great peace and beauty and is a consecrated burial ground for both Maori and Pakeha. There, beside the informative Plaque erected by the Historic Places Trust our party surveyed the magnificent view of the environs of Thames, the Estuary fed by the Waihou, Piako and Kauaeranga Rivers, and the great expanse of the Hauraki Plains lying between this sentinel of the Coromandel Range and the Hapuakohe Range blue on the south-western horizon. Mr. Isdale unfolded the following fascinating story. Ed.)

It is not certain when this site was first occupied by the Maoris. Its use might even have gone back to the earliest inhabitants, the pale-skinned and peaceable Urukehu, who seem to have lived there in the time of the moa. Later arrivals, the Toi people, increased until they became known as "the myriads of Toi" and drove the Urukehu to the ranges and finally to the last "fairy" stronghold on Mount Moehau.

When the Great Migration canoes arrived, the Arawa canoe people became overlords over the Toi people, who still made up the bulk of the population, with Arawa tribe names like Ngati Huarere. Many hillsides along the coast were scarped and terraced by these people, who lived largely on fish and shellfish. The river then ran just under Totara pa, where there was a shelly beach. The pa covered the entrance to the Thames Valley, with a wide view over land and sea, and became very important.

All the extensive trenching and earthworks, and the scarping and terracing of the hillsides, still to be seen, were done by hundreds of Maoris working with their wooden spades or ko and carrying flax kits of earth endlessly. They also carried many kits of shellfish up from the beaches, year after year, and some cuttings made in the shell deposits within the pa showed then to be many feet thick. Later, Tainui canoe people began to come into the district from the Miranda side of the firth and conquered the Ngati Huarere. The people now became known as the Ngati Maru.

After the overthrowing of Arawa suzerainty of the region by people of Tainui stock about 1650, Totara Pa became the principal central stronghold of the Marutuahu domains. Their saying was: "The bow-post of my canoe is Moehau, the stern-post of my canoe is Aroha". If a man died in sight of a high hill behind Totara, overlooking it, called now Gentle Annie, but formerly Puke Oraka it was said: "He has fallen in the centre of the canoe".

When Captain Cook came this way, in late November, 1769, he anchored at Waiomu and went with the tide in a rowing boat, to enter the river, which he named after the Thames. (It was noted by the Maoris as having a double mouth, having at that time an island at its entrance. One branch ran immediately under Totara Pa, which then had a white shelly beach along its foreshore under the heights. Cook went up that branch on the way up, using the other to come down). Most of the people were down at the fishing village on the island just across the way, surrounded by mud as Banks noted. It was a good place to meet the strangers, whom they welcomed "with open arms," having already heard of their sojourn at Mercury Bay. Only a few were left up in the main stronghold. It had several dependencies, like a medieval castle. (This was common practice. When the tide of Tainui conquest reached Coromandel Harbour in the latter 1600s the great stronghold of Arikitahi had a whole complex of villages around it).

Ngapuhi Raids
The Ngati Maru were frequently raided by the Ngapuhi from the north, but they were never able to take Totara Pa. During one Ngapuhi siege (1819) the defenders ran short of water, and a party of young men, piled with flax cloaks, fought their way into a spring and back again to wring out all their mats into calabashes for the defenders. This was "The Battle of Dripping Garments". By now, with the coming of the white men, the Ngapuhi began to get guns. Their first raid with guns, under the well-known Hongi was against Turua Pa. The defenders, as usual, got up on a staging over-looking the river and ordered Hongi's men to come up. Hongi drew his canoes up at a convenient distance instead and had a shooting match. This was the end of Turua Pa. The Ngati Maru began to try to get guns, and did obtain a few.

Pas along the coastal heights over-looking Turua and Thames appear to have suffered next, but Totara remained untaken, Then, in 1820, Hongi went to England and came back with more muskets than had ever been seen in New Zealand before. When he left there were about 500 muskets in the hands of the Ngapuhi. Now there were 2,000.

In 1821 Hongi came with a great fleet of canoes to Totara. But on three sides the hillsides were steepened so that all there was to shoot at was sky and palisades up above. On the fourth side was a flat neck of land, but that was barred by the deep trench and high earthwork. The gap was made later by white men for a roadway. The defenders, with their few muskets, could reload in safety behind the thick earthwork and look over to take quick shots.

Great Massacre
So, after three days ravaging the surrounding countryside, Hongi said he was going away and sent in a party of chiefs for a talk. As the party was leaving, one warned a friend among the Ngati Maru - "Kia tupato" - be on your guard. Soon Hongi's war canoes were seen vanishing around Tararu Point. Doubtless the watchmen looked over the sea carefully that night, in case they came back, Meanwhile, Hongi's men, who had disembarked round the point, were stealing overland in the darkness, and suddenly there was a clamour and shouting as they burst into the Pa.

A survivor later told his son how he, a young boy, was near the palisades by his wounded father (hastily wounded and left for the cannibal feast later) who told the boy to leave him and slip out. He joined other fugutives in the swamp and they fled over the ridges towards Tairua. Looking back, he could see the glare of many fires, and hear the chanting and stamping as the hundreds of Ngapuhi danced war dances while they cooked their victims.

Ngapuhi Driven Out
With their key defence position gone, the Ngati Maru fled to the Waikato, between Matamata and Cambridge, where they made themselves so comfortable that they still stayed after Hongi's death in 1828, though their war parties came up that year and drove the last Ngapuhi raiders off the Coromandel Peninsula. They had to be chased out by the Matamata Maoris after a stiff battle in 1830. Then they came home to Hauraki again, but Totara remained empty, because of the great killing there.

THAMES HISTORY

THE THAMES GOLD FIELD:

Thames township, or "The Thames" as it was often referred to is located on the southern shores of the Hauraki Gulf. European traders and missionaries began to settle in the area 130 years ago. Marutuahu survivors of the early 1800s inter tribal warfare, returned to live peacefully in the area also.

"Ngati Maru chief Hoterene Taipari expressed the Maori attitude when he said in a speech at Parawai that the Marutuahu were tired of war; they wanted all tribes and all races to live in peace together, as one family. If the pakeha met with opposition when seeking timber or mining rights it was only over details: the over-ruling Maori spirit was one of co-operation"(1).

The first major discovery of gold was made on August 10, 1867 by a prospector, William Hunt, in a waterfall in the bed of the Kuranui Stream. This mine produced over 102,353oz bullion and was known as the Shotover.

The era from 1868 to 1871 were the bonanza years for the town with gold production topping one million pounds sterling at its peak. Official figures for production of the Thames Mines recorded a yield of 2,327,619oz bullion with the value at $845 million.

The richest bonanza of the fields were the Manukau-Golden Crown-Caledonian mines but many others yielded near equivalent amounts Towards the end of the last century Thames was the largest centre of population in New Zealand with 18,000 inhabitants and well over 100 hotels and three theatres. The population today stands at approximately 7,000 and now has only four hotels in the town centre.

NEW ZEALAND GOLD MINING HISTORY: (2)

In the 1830s a group of convicts, ship deserters and whalers who had settled on Beesons Island near the entrance to Coromandel Harbour reported discovering gold, but this and other reports about this time attracted little interest. It was the discovery of gold in the South Island that led to a series of gold rushes and the establishment of what soon became a major industry.

In 1856, gold was found in the Aorere Valley, and a gold rush to the Collingwood-Takaka district followed. Gabriel Read reported the discovery of gold in the gravels of the Waitahuna and Tuapeka rivers in 1861, and a major gold rush to Central Otago followed. There was a smaller rush to Marlborough the following year, and rushes to finds on the West Coast in 1865 and 1866. Recorded gold production in 1866 reached 735,000 ounces (over 22 tonnes), a level that has not been exceeded since then.

The early miners used primitive equipment, gold pans and sluice boxes with the gold-bearing gravel being shoveled by hand. Hydraulic methods using high-pressure water were developed to work elevated terrace deposits, and water races were built over long distances, often through rough terrain, to convey water to the mine sites. As the more accessible, near-surface deposits were worked, attention turned to the large gravel deposits along the main rivers, particularly the Clutha River and its tributaries in Otago.

After numerous unsuccessful attempts, the first steam powered dredges started work on the Clutha River in 1881. The world's first commercially successful gold dredge was the Dunedin, which continued to operate in the Clutha River until 1901 by which time it had recovered 17,000 ounces (528 kg) of gold. More than 200 gold dredges operated in Otago and Southland between the 1890s and 1915.

Hard rock gold mining took longer to get established, requiring capital and expertise beyond the capacity of the alluvial miners. Gold production from quartz vein deposits commenced in the early 1860s with rock crushing batteries being set up to crush the gold-bearing rocks to allow the gold to be recovered. In 1867 the goldfield at Thames started producing, and in 1875 the Waihi area became open to prospecting. A gold rush followed but the miners failed to recognise the potential of the quartz vein deposits they discovered, including the Martha vein, discovered at Waihi in 1878.

Gold in the quartz veins of the Hauraki district is very fine grained and was difficult to recover using the methods available at the time. The first commercial use of a new process using cyanide solution to recover gold was at the Crown Battery at Karangahake in 1889. The Government bought the New Zealand rights to the cyanide process, and users had paid off the Government investment by 1905.

The success of the cyanide process led to a major expansion of the Martha mine, which by 1903 was the largest gold mine in New Zealand. The Victoria battery at Waikino was expanded, the Cornish pumphouse (which is still standing) was completed and new underground workings were developed.By 1911 Waihi had a population of 6500 and was the largest town in the region. When the Martha mine eventually closed in 1952 it had produced about 5 million ounces of gold (155 tonnes) and 35 million ounces (1088 tonnes) of silver from nearly 11 million tonnes of ore which was mined almost exclusively by underground methods. The mine is still worked today as an open pit and is the largest known hard rock mineral deposit in New Zealand.

Elsewhere in the Hauraki Goldfield, gold-silver production is recorded from several hundred mines working about 50 separate deposits. The total value of gold and silver produced from the Hauraki Goldfield is about $6700 million at current metal prices.

While alluvial gold mining dominated in the South Island after the gold rushes, hard rock mines were developed in Nelson, Westland and Otago. The Reefton Goldfield, on the West Coast of the South Island, produced more than 2 million ounces (62 tonnes) of gold from 1870 until 1951. The largest producer was the Blackwater mine at Waiuta. Gold was also produced from the gold-scheelite veins of Otago from the early 1870s but it was not until the Macraes mine was developed in 1990 that the region became a significant producer of gold from hard-rock mining.

Throughout most of the 20th century, production declined due mainly to the falling real price of gold. As the hard rock gold mines closed and gold dredging diminished, soon only the Kanieri dredge on the Taramakau River remained as a significant gold producer.

Rising gold prices from the mid-1970s led to a surge of investment in gold exploration and production after more than 50 years of decline. At its peak in the mid-1980s about 20 exploration companies were active and a string of discoveries were made, including the Martha and Golden Cross mines at Waihi, the Macraes mine in Otago, and the Globe-Progress prospect at Reefton. Gold production increased from less than 10,000 ounces (311 kg) in 1983 to 390,000 ounces (12 tonnes) in 1995, an output last achieved 80 years ago.

HISTORY OF THE BATTLE OF THE STREETS

The Paeroa Battle of the Streets race meeting has been going for over 15 years and runs like a well-oiled machine, even with State Highway 2 closed for the majority of the day. Held annually on the third whole weekend of February, riders from around the country and overseas converge on this otherwise quiet town to compete in the race.

With all the precision and planning of a military operation, the circuit is set-up under the cover of darkness with SH2 finally being shut around 6 am. Diversions are put in place to accommodate the traffic passing through whilst plenty of free parking and camping available for spectators.

Originally the Battle of the Streets motorcycle race had its beginnings in the Paeroa RSA in 1991. Over a 'pint of beer' Bob Jeffery (ex- motorcycle racer) suggested to friends Colin Lynch and Sharland Waikato that the streets of Paeroa could be turned into a street circuit. The three were joined by six other enthusiasts who turned the idea into a reality after 15 months of planning, with the first meeting being held on the third Sunday of February in 1992. Two of them were even willing to mortgage their own homes to turn their idea into a reality.

The 1.52km circuit starts in the main street (Belmont Road and Normanby Road also State Highway 2), right into Arney Street, over the hill into Princes Street, into the "S" bends linking Wharf Street to Marshall Street, along the back straight to the hairpin opposite the Railway Reserve and back into the main street. The circuit has become known as the "Hacksaw" owing to its shape. It has provided a testing circuit on which riders reach speeds of 280 kph and sidecars close to 220 kph along the main straight.

The crowd support has been excellent with the event achieving an estimated 8,000 spectators in 1993 rising to 11,000 in 1998. For more recent meetings, an increase in publicity before the event has seen the numbers swelling to an incredible 13,000 – 15,000. 2004 saw national television coverage which further increased the profile of the event, and it has been televised every year since.

On race day there are some 350 volunteers involved. They come from croquet, athletics, soccer and rugby teams, Maori culture groups, air training corps and boy scouts, Legion of Frontiersmen, amateur radio club and women's leisure marchers, to name a few. Also, farmers, tradesmen, contractors, transport firms and local businesses providing staff, machinery, equipment and sponsorship in cash and kind. The Order of St. Johns use the event as a training day, and the local Fire Brigade and Police are also invloved on the day. There is a team of over 100 on Paeroa’s central streets from 5am on race day constructing the circuit and preparing it for the practice sessions. During the day volunteers work as marshals, security, gatekeepers, crossing marshals, crash recovery, emergency services, race officials and communications, plus numerous other personnel ensure the smooth running of the meeting. At the end of the day another army of volunteers dismantle the circuit, the barriers are removed, the deer fencing rolled-up and the hay bales loaded onto trucks and returned to farmers’ hay barns. The road closure and detour signs are taken down and State Highway 2 and Paeroa's main street returns to normal by around 6pm.

There are 11 classes that run throughout the day, these are: Post Classics – Forgotten Era Pre 1982, Formula 2, Junior Classics, Senior Classics, Formula 3, Formula Paeroa, Sidecars, Post Classic Historic Pre 1972, BEARS, Super Motard and the Robert Holden Memorial Race.

The event is the largest sporting occasion in the Thames Valley and one of the largest motor sport meetings in New Zealand and receives excellent support from sponsors in both cash and kind. For the first seven years Bel Ray (NZ) Limited had the naming rights and from 1999 to 2001 Moller Yamalube Limited has the rights with Yamalube. Now it is the parent company, Yamaha Motor New Zealand Limited who holds the naming rights to the event. Continuing their support by recently signing another three-year agreement.

After the first meeting some $12,000 was donated back to those clubs, groups and organisations which provide their members as the volunteer workers. Since then this figure has risen to $38,620 after the last meeting, bringing the total for the 15 meetings to $350,315 that has gone back into the community. In the meantime the Trust has established its own insurance fund to pay the bills even if the event is cancelled.

In all, the Yamaha Battle of the Streets race meeting in Paeroa is a fun and spectacular day out for all the family, even if you only have a slight interest in motor sport. Never will you see as much overtaking and jostling for position.

Track laying began in 1975 by Barry Brickell shortly after he established the pottery workshop on a corner of the 22Ha block-of land he had recently purchased. As a railway enthusiast he saw the practical and environmental advantages of having a narrow-gauge railway system through his rugged scrub-covered land to give all weather access to clay and pine wood kiln fuel. Yellow plastic clay derived from the weathering of the old volcanic rocks. The scattered pine trees are self-sown from original pines planted by the early Californian gold diggers of last century. New Zealand's first official gold discovery was made in this district in 1852. Most of the raw materials for the making of terracotta pottery garden wares, tiles and sculpture thus comes from the hills above.

Dieselmouse - the very first passenger train

Brickell worked for 15 years and poured a considerable amount of money into railway construction before it was licensed to carry fare-paying public in 1990. This huge gamble has now paid off, while returns from the pottery have been steadily diminishing. A recent move into the tile and brickmaking industry is an exciting new development.
Today, the railway carries more passengers than raw materials because it has become a major and unique tourist attraction. Unlike most other tourist railways, the DCR is newly built rather than being an old, line that has been restored. It is New Zealand's only narrow-gauge mountain railway. All earlier railways built to convey minerals and timber have been abandoned, some now made into heritage trails.

Early surveying of the tortuous route was done using a home-made instrument and miles of survey tracks had to be cut through the steep scrubby land. A maximum workable adhesion gradient of 1 in 15 was decided upon but the average gradient of the line is about 1 in 26. Despite the narrow gauge of 15 inches (381mm) which allowed for sharper curves, there are plenty of heavy earthworks along the line which necessitated the use of a bulldozer contractor and the digging of some very deep cuttings.
The trains are wide enough to accomodate two adults per seat.

There are several major civil engineering features on the railway. Some of the big viaducts were built under difficult conditions, reminding us of the early colonial engineering feats. The three short tunnels were made by the cut and cover process. Ceramic art works complimenting the engineering can be seen from the train.

The specially designed passenger trains were built at the DCR's own engineering workshop located beside the potteries. The latest is the "Possum", an 18-seater twin-bogie diesel railcar built in 1994. The "Snake", a double-articulated 3-bodied train-set, a truly ambitious project was built in 1992. Like a snake it can twist and turn around the sharp curves abounding up the line.

A new train of more sophisticated design is the workshop project for 2004.

These units have special features possibly unique in New Zealand railway engineering such as the use of hydraulic transmission and special designs for safe operation on the sharp curves and steep grades. The trains are also fitted with modern air-type braking, air operated track sanding and centre-mounted diesel engines. The "Snake" can -accommodate up to 38 people which is a modern tour bus load.

There are two older diesel locomotives and various wagons used for conveying clay, wood, native plants for the extensive forest replanting project up the line, and others for construction purposes. A steam locomotive for occasional non-fire season use is on the drawing board.

There are five major viaducts and five reversing points up the main line as well as two horseshoe spirals, on the route to the present summit. The double deck viaduct is unique. In a return trip on the railway, trains pass over it four times in different directions on both levels. The two levels are connected by a spiral all in very rugged, forested terrain. The main span is 14 m long an total length of the upper level is 46 m. Its construction took two years.

Hi all.

Breakfast is over and all guests have gone out to play, some are off to Driving Creek railway and others are heading for the beach armed with beach towels and umberellas.
The weather is just perfect and i am so\pleased that the Pohutukawa festival has had such a wonderful week.
Last night we took our guests to the concert at Tairua and the night was spectacular with Opshop playing and a champagne picnic just made the whole thing perfect.
The next concert we are doing the champagne picnic for is in the Orchard at Pauanui in Febuary so may be we will see you then have to dash as the day is just too lovely to stay inside. cheers

HI ALL
YESTERDAY WAS ONE OF THOSE AWESOMELY BEAUTIFUL COROMANDEL DAYS,
SO AFTER EVERYONE HAD BEEN FED AND GRAY AND I HAD SERVICED THE ROOMS WE DECIDED TO GO TO FLAXMANS BAY TO VIEW THE SCULPTURE EVENT AT ECCENTRIC CAFE.
WE DROVE UP THE 25 TO TAPU AND CROSSED OVER THE COROMANDEL RANGES IN BEAUTIFUL SUNSHINE UNFORTUNATLY WE GOT A PUNCTURE ON THE WAY DOWN BUT THE MAN WAS PREPARED SO WE WERE SOON OFF AGAIN.
NEEDLESS TO SAY LOADS OF CARS STOPPED TO MAKE SURE WE WERE OK THATS THE LOVELY BIT ABOUT COROMANDEL EVERY ONE IS LOOKING OUT FOR EACH OTHER.
ANYWAY BACK TO THE DAY WE HEADED FOR FLAXMANS BAY AND WATCHED THE SCULPTING IT WAS GREAT LARGE CHUNKS OF STONE TAKING SHAPE IN FROUNT OF OUR EYES SO MUCH TALENT MY HEART JUST FILLED WITH JOY.
WE HAD A GREAT LUNCH AT THE CAFE THEN WALKED UP SHAKESPEARES POINT AND GAZED OUT OVER THE BAY OF COOK.
ON THE WAY DOWN WE MET OUR GUESTS STAYING WITH US AT THE CAFE QUITE BY ACCIDENT AND SHARED A CUP OF TEA FINNALLY A LOVELY RIDE BACK AND A HOUR IN THE HOT SPAR TUB FINISHED OUR DAY OH BLISS SEE YOU SOON

Next Concert 24th January 2009

Nestled amongst the rolling hills of the Coromandel Peninsula, Gary and Anne Fowler's rural property is the location of the annual "Concert in the orchard". This "must do" event of the holiday season features local and international acts and raises money for worthwhile charities.
Well supported by local clubs and merchants, the event is popular with family groups with plenty to see, do and listen to. Aerobatics from the local stunt flying team, products from local wineries and music and entertainment for all ages and tastes from Opera to Rocking with the Stars.
Our next concert is going to be the best yet. Check out the list of confirmed acts.

Sights & Sounds of Scotland returns to Paeroa

The 16th Paeroa Highland Games & Tattoo on 14th February 2009 at the Paeroa Domain features 12 hours of Scottish entertainment with plenty of activities for all the family to enjoy.
What started out as a small Pipe Bands Contest, has grown over the years, and today is a fully-fledged Highland Games complete with an evening Tattoo. Between 4000-5000 people attend each year, with visitors and competitors coming from throughout New Zealand and overseas.
This community event continues to grow each year, and is a major undertaking by a small team of dedicated volunteers who believe in putting something back into the community in which they live.
The Games commences at 8.30am with Solo Piping, this competition again being part of a tri – series event with Hamilton and Tauranga competitions. Highland Dancing, an Axemen’s carnival and the Heavyweight athletes all attract large crowds throughout the day.
The Pipe Bands contest usually attracts 12 to 14 Pipe Bands from the Auckland, Central North Island and Taranaki centres, and features Sets and Medleys as well as a street march.
Scottish Clan’s will be in attendance, with an opportunity to check out your genealogy, perhaps try Scottish food or purchase Scottish souvenirs.
The highlight for many will be the evening Tattoo, which is modelled on the famous Edinburgh Tattoo in Scotland. The Paeroa Domain will come alive at 6.30pm with this 2-½ hour family spectacular presented in front of the replica Paeroa castle.

The Kauri Run

Over 150 years ago most of the Coromandel Penisular was covered
in the beautiful Kauri Tree.

Today there are very few left.

This new and exciting off road run will take off road competitors from Waikawau Farm Park, up and along the Central divide into the township of Coromandel.TRACING SOME OF THE AREAS WERE KAURI GREW
This run will take between 2 and 4 hours.
Its tough but scenically very beautiful and the competitor will get views of both the Pacific Coast and the Firth of Thames.There is also a shorter run of 1 to 3 hours for beginners or thoses not so game.

Interesting InformationWhether you are self drive tourists, free independent travellers, wine touring or on a walking holiday, Thames has something to offer you. As travellers you may be following the Pacific Coast Highway, as yet an underdeveloped scenic route following the coast from Auckland along the Eastern sea board and meeting up with the Thermal highway that ends at Roroura, (were there is a good airport to fly to the south Island or other destinations). This beautiful area is relatively unknown in the major tourist market and as a result is very much unspoilt by the mass tourism of other areas and yet has all of the qualities they possess. The Coromandel is as beautiful as the Bay of Islands and has many activities such as sea kayaking, scenic boat trips, diving, fishing, bird watching and golfing.We at Cotswold Cottage are just 3 minutes from the Historic town of Thames with all its colonial architecture and aptly named by Captain Cook in 1769 while he observed the transit of mercury across the face of the sun. This explains some of the names of places on the Coromandel such as Mercury Bay and Cooks Beach. Thames Golf club is only 3 minutes from our Bed and Breakfast at Cotswold and in the area there are at least 3 other courses within a 30 to 45 minute drive, making this a perfect place to stay for all you budding Nick Faldos!We also have the hot springs at Miranda about 30 minutes away which is well worth the visit to enjoy some serious relaxation. The area also possesses some of the best New Zealand walks in the country. We ourselves are just 15 minutes from the start of the famous Pinnacles Kauaeranga Kauri trail and a host of shorter and less stressful walks and yet is only 90 minutes from the Auckland international airport making us a convenient and desirable destination. Tauranga and Mount Maunganui or Rotoura are within a 2 hour journey and White Island, an active volcanic Island that you can fly to and walk on is within a short drive.There are also several festivals held yearly on the Coromandel. The Pohutukawa festival 23 Nov to 9 DEC last year and around the same time every year, the K2 cycle race (the toughest one day race in New Zealand) and the famous Scallop festival in September. GODWITS AND COTSWOLD COTTAGE

THE GODWITS In a couple of weeks the the Bar Tailed Godwit will leave Alaska to make a journey lasting around 9 days, across the Pacific to New Zealand.
Some will be adult birds who have made the trip before; they will return to precisely the same beaches they left from some time in March. Some will be juveniles who will, for the first time, find their way here across 12,000 km of empty ocean. Mingling with the bar–tailed godwits bound for New Zealand, are Hudsonian Godwits, travelling to Tierra del Fuego; Northern Wheatears traveling across Asia to wintering grounds in Africa and Swainsons Thrushes going south to the equatorial forests of Venezuela and Brazil.
Beringia is the start of the Godwit journey. Godwit along with other migrants start arriving here about mid–September and spread out throughout the country including Miranda on the Firth of Thames just 15 minutes from Cotswold Cottage Country House.When they arrive they are are lean, tired, hungry and weather worn - just feathers and bones, making the long legs and bills look even longer.
They leave New Zealand in March and early April and arrive in Alaska in May and early June. The return route is probably via northern Australia or New Guinea, and Northern Asia rather than directly across the Pacific.
Miranda is a fantastic sea bird center and a great place to visit while you are staying at Cotswold Cottage and only a few minutes from the thermal pools too
